These are 15 unsung heroes that between them saved thousands upon thousands of lives in one way or another during World War 2. If the lives they saved had been lost, would today have been different? Did they shape our history from then till now?

Irena Sendler, Disguised Herself as a Nurse
Complete with false ID this ‘nurse’ smuggled thousands of Jewish children from harm’s way. Although once captured and tortured, she escaped and continued her brave work.
Audie Murphy, Too Young to Fight
Lying about his age in order to enlist, Murphy fought in several war zones and was the youngest soldier to receive the Medal of Honor but that was not the only medal he won. He was also awarded medals for bravery from France and Belgium.
Matt Urban, The Most Decorated
As an officer in the United States Infantry, Urban won more than a dozen medals for his bravery during the war but in 1980, he was awarded four more including the Medal of Honor.
In 1989 the Guinness Book of Records recorded his as the most decorated US army soldier of World War 2.
Henryk Slawik, A Good Politician
As a Polish Politician, Slawik validated false documentation for over 5,000 Hungarian Jews in order for the Nazis to release them to Poland.
Chiune Sugihara, A Japanese Consul
Openly disobeying his Government whilst serving in Europe, Sugihara would issue hand written Visas to Jews. It is believed that this selfless act saved more than 6,000 lives.
