The Chess Machine
In Europe in 1770, a Turkish man claimed to have a machine that played chess. The machine went on to beat Benjamin Franklin and Napoleon but later a chess master was discovered inside the machine.
Displayed in the Barnum museum was what was claimed to be a mummified mermaid found in Fiji. Later it was found to be the head of a monkey connected to the body of a fish.
In the 50s, the BBC received hundreds of calls after they aired an April Fools segment about harvesting spaghetti trees in Switzerland.
An ex-prime minister of the Philippines claimed that a lost tribe had been found. Later he fled with millions of dollars that had been donated for the tribe’s development.
